The Albert Schweitzer Educational Associates are committed to supporting the work of organizations dedicated to the philosophy of Albert Schweitzer. Their emphasis is on the development and distribution of educational materials for elementary through high school students.

ASEA currently has two books for sale:

My Book About Dr. Schweitzer by Vee Guthrie ($4.00 plus postage) is a twelve page coloring book for young children, kindergarten age. On white standard 8.5 x 11-inch paper folded, and stapled, it can easily be reproduced by a teacher for distribution to members of the class. It is also available in Haitian Creole and will shortly be available in Spanish.

My Friend in Africa by Frederick Franck ($7.50 plus postage) is the story of Bolo, a young African boy who is a patient in Dr. Schweitzer's hospital in Gabon. It is appropriate for 8-12 year olds. The author, well known as an artist, served Dr. Schweitzer as the hospital dentist. Bolo learns about reverence for life, and about what he is going to do when he grows up.

ASEA was formed in 2003 to continue work initially begun under the auspices of the Albert Schweitzer Institute prior to its affiliation with with Quinnipiac University. It enjoys the support of ASI at QU and of Dr. Schweitzer's daughter, Rhena Schweitzer Miller who serves as an honorary board member of ASEA.

The principals are Jenifer Grant and Nikki Lindberg:

Jenifer Grant has been an educator most of her adult life. She participated in the initial development of the educational materials for the Albert Schweitzer Institute. She worked with Jeanette Byers in her translation of Brothers in Spirit, the correspondence between Dr. William Larimer Mellon and Dr. Albert Schweitzer as well as the compilation of The Spirit of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, Haiti. She arranged for the translation of Vee Guthrie's coloring book of Albert Schweitzer into French and Haitian Creole which is being circulated into schools in the Deschapelles area. Jenny currently serves on the development committee for Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, and on the board of advisors of the Albert Schweitzer Institute. She lives in Essex, Connecticut and serves on the boards of the Essex Land Conservation Trust and the Essex Historical Society. Jenny has four adult children. She is a graduate of Smith College.

Nikki Lindberg served as vice-president and director of programs for the Albert Schweitzer Institute and as a member of its board of advisors. Before joining the staff of ASI, Nikki worked in not for profit development, for Quinnipiac University, director of development at the University of New Haven for nine years and as director of public affairs at the Connecticut Hospice for many years where she worked with the founders in the development of the first hospice inpatient facility in the U.S. She has served as an officer of a number of volunteer boards including the Yale University Art Gallery Associates, the Yale University Peabody Museum Associates, the English Speaking Union, the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, Connecticut Chapter. Nikki currently serves on the boards of the Chester Land Trust, the Robbie Collomore Music Series. Nikki raised four children. Born in France, she was educated in France, Canada and Bryn Mawr College.

Having respect for all living things and recognizing their interconnection provides a sound foundation for ethical values. Through his philosophy, his writing and his life, Dr. Schweitzer has much to show us about how to be better, more thoughtful and productive people. Children of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Their characters can be strengthened, their awareness sharpened and their minds broadened through Albert Schweitzer's Lessons in Humanity.
